Ordinary Time, 11th Sunday. We judge other people by what they do and by what they own. We judge ourselves the same way. But King David learns that God’s love for him is a more important standard. The woman in today’s Gospel responds by loving Jesus with all her heart. We have heard that God loves us, but do we really believe it? (13 Jun 2010)

When listening to your homily it reminded me of a book I read after college called The Millionaire Next Door. At that point in my life I wasn't going to church, however I think it was a tool God was using to show me that things weren't always what they seemed. The book helped explain more about people that had a very high net worth - however you wouldn't know it from the outside. The people didn't drive the high end cars and they didn't live in high priced homes. The homes and vehicles were moderately priced. I believe they also talked about their clothing - again moderately priced, etc. Now that I understand just a little bit more about true love and my faith, I understand that we must be so careful about what we see as to what is the "truth".
I love my dad so much, he is a very wise man. He would often refer to certain people he knew in town as "1 cent millionaires" because they appeared to have "so much" in material wealth - however the truth was they had not but maybe a penny to their names. I realized how wise he was when later I saw these certain people get divorced or end up bankrupt. Sad, but true. They appeared to have "so much" yet the truth was they didn't own a thing.
You mentioned that what is more important than what we do or what we own is our relationship with God. This in particular reminded me of St. Francis of Assisi - who gave up so much in order to follow the love for God. I sometimes laugh to myself at what others think of us due to how we dress, where we shop or the status of our vehicle...because if only they knew the truth of what was really going on in our lives. It is nice to live a simple life - because in this simplicity we find God...and that is what truly matters.
God Bless + Thank you for the reminders that many of us need.
